This month has been extremely busy! Lots of things going on including Easter & my main guys all have birthdays this month. My son, my dad, & my husband all have birthdays this month! Today is my dad’s birthday & he is now 66 years old. He claims that makes him an old man, but I think he’s got plenty of spunk left in him for many more years. I went to visit a local farm with him that belongs to a friend of his. He’s been helping out with all sorts of things & I thought it’d be fun to share my visit with y’all.
Thursday I wound up not having any students in my afternoon class, which left me with a free afternoon. I decided to spend it with Dad since his birthday is today. We had strong thunderstorms coming through today, to the point they canceled school for the day. The storms were not as bad as expected here, but I’m still glad I got to go out & visit the animals with Dad!
Chickens & Horses
I did a post recently about the portable chicken coop Dad built for the chicks he’s raising. They will be moving to this farm once they’re old enough to be with the big chickens. These are the big chickens & two roosters!
Dad gathering eggs in the chicken coop he helped to build. Seven eggs today!
Inside the coop…
They’ll be adding on to the coop once the younger chickens are acclimated to the new surroundings. Across from the chickens there were 3 very curious horses…
They were mostly hoping we were going to put some food in their troughs, but Dad doesn’t feed the horses. In the picture above you can see the larger white horse in the background named Spirit. She wasn’t as curious as the other two! Below is a picture of the miniature horse named Charley…
He was quite talkative & kept putting his hoof in the bucket to indicate he wanted something in there! When I reached to pet him I think he thought I might have a treat & tried to nibble my hand, haha! This horse is named Toby & he is very tall…
His head was above mine & I’m 5′-8″ tall! By the way they have a bale of hay at the end of their pasture, so they did have food. They just saw Dad going into the barn where their other food is. : )
There are also a few cows at this portion of the farm. They are too old to need mother’s milk, but not old enough to be in with the larger cows & bull. When Dad stopped to lock the gate, the cows had to come & investigate…
Most of these animals are just looking for food even though they get plenty!
Cows & Donkeys
Next we headed to a larger pasture where the rest of the cows, a large bull, & two donkeys reside.
They were also hoping for food in the troughs! The bull is the largest one rubbing his head on the end of the wooden trough. Dad built that too!
He said the bull will lift it up if there’s even a few bits of food under it! The cows don’t have names, just numbers on their tags.
One did let me pet her, but most were uninterested since I had no food. It’s all about the food y’all!
There are several calves that are still nursing in with these cows. The farm owner is expecting 3 more soon!
The calves that didn’t follow their mom to the feeding trough were laying in a group enjoying the sun.
The two donkeys were not interested in us at all. One was rolling around in the dirt & I moved closer to take a picture. He immediately got up & they both walked away only to turn around & stomp at me!
Dad says he’s seen the donkeys kick the bull if he gets too close. Donkeys are great protectors, but they don’t mess around! They’re pretty sure the female is pregnant since her belly is fairly large & round. Maybe one day I’ll get to see a baby donkey!
I hope you enjoyed seeing all the farm animals, because I certainly did. It was nice to spend the afternoon with Dad & see what he’s been up to. We also made a trip to Home Depot afterwards & picked up a Zaxby’s order he put in on the way home. It was a great day!
Happy birthday Dad! I hope you are having a wonderful day! : )
