Past Challenges
The current list for 2019 challenges is below & you can check out this post for a list of 2018 challenges.
- Giant Paper Roses
- Making Feathers of All Kinds
- Bleaching Fabric for Bags
- Painted Wooden Bowls & Trays
I’ve been on an organizing kick, so I was looking for something along that line for this month’s challenge. This pin from Knick of Time – Vintage Farmhouse Living caught my eye. A tiered organizer would be great for my work table – holds more stuff & takes up less room! I’ve made a tiered tray in the past that doubled as a flower vase, but this one will be different. I’m looking to use up some stuff on my DIY shelf!

Bits & Pieces Tiered Organizer
The inspiration pin had more of a farmhouse-decor vibe, but I want something that fits in better with my creative space. Not that I don’t like that look, I just prefer something more colorful most of the time!
The first thing I did was check out potential tiered-tray-making items on one of my DIY shelves.
This is where I keep random things I think might be useful one day! It’s right over my sewing table, so that’s why you can see the rack of hangers at the bottom. I like to take advantage of all vertical space!
Here’s the items I pulled off the shelf that are potential candidates for my project. A couple of old cake pans, various plates & chargers, a broken coffee cup, old jar, painted tin can lids, & some old glass light covers. I grabbed more things after I started stacking, which you’ll see in the next few pics!
I knew I wanted my tiered organizer to have a deeper bottom level with two levels above that. Since I’m using random items on hand, I just started stacking to see what I liked! This soda bottle is cool looking, but I don’t like the flatness of the plate…
Definitely like the cake tin better, but that bottle is way too tall…
Now this is too short!
Just right! Feeling a little like Goldilocks now…
That’s an old cookie tin by the way because I can’t throw them away! Good thing I don’t buy them very often… : D
Time to figure out the next level! I do like the extra storage potential using the jar, but, again, I’m not feeling the plate…
Alright, this is it! Love the different mediums & shapes together!
Now that I’ve decided on the setup, it’s time to paint! Did you really think I was just going to leave it as is??
Paintin’ Time!
Y’all it has been a hot minute since I’ve painted anything, which is a crying shame! I was so excited to paint again that I couldn’t decide what color to use, so these are the options…
I sprayed little splotches in the bottom of the pan to see how things looked. Although I like how the blue & black are melding together, I decided to leave that one out. The little dish on top is about that color anyway. The light peach is a definite no for this project!
I also tested out the Cement spray on the glass candlestick & decided it would work for my “columns”.
I’m going for a sort of 80s punk style in tiered tray form, so I had to paint in steps to achieve the affect I wanted. First I painted the bottoms of the cake tins in the metallic black. The cookie tin, glass candlestick, & bottom of the dish got a coat of the cement spray.
Next I painted the interiors of the cake tins with the purple & coral. After it dried, I over sprayed the edges with more metallic black. Then everything got flicks & flecks of the purple, coral, & black.
Time to stick all the parts together using my favorite adhesive – e6000! I’ve found this works great when sticking things together that are made of different materials. It holds up really well under most normal conditions. I say that because the mushroom pincushion on a past DIY project did come off. But only after I knocked the entire thing off a really tall drafting table!
Either way, I’m scuffing the paint on this project to get better adhesion with the glue.
I realized after I started gluing this together that the lid will still be removable on the cookie tin. Secret storage for snacks y’all! : D
What do y’all think, does it have that 80s vibe?
Adding the Punk
I think it’s time to “punk” things up a bit, ha ha! At least I amuse myself even if no one else is laughing! I gathered a bunch of metal buttons from my various button jars & some other bits from my scrapbook stash.
Y’all gluing on vertical surfaces is never fun! Sometimes extra “fingers” are necessary & these plastic clothespins are great for that.
Some of the buttons grabbed on right away, no problem. But some of them did not want to be part of my project & kept falling off! You can see I’ve got some serious slide marks going on…
Since I plan on covering the whole side of this eventually, I’m not too bothered by it. I’ll be adding random things as I find them, like this sliced nickle…
I guy I used to work with put it through a paper shredder just to show me that I didn’t have to remove staples. He could have just said that without the demo, but then I wouldn’t have this to add to my project!
I also glued on these tiny handles I got on clearance at Hobby Lobby…
I painted the top dish with the cement paint on the outside then did some speckling with the purple & coral paints. The outside had some stains that didn’t want to come off.
All in all I’m pretty pleased with how this turned out!
Oh yeah! It has a secret compartment too! : D
I do intend to fully cover the middle tier, but it takes a while to get stuff to stay on there! Until I find another day to wait for glue to set, I’m going to start filling it up…
This bits & pieces tiered organizer fits in nicely in my craft space! Hope y’all enjoyed the post!
Now, let’s see what the other hosts have created ⇓⇓
How stinking cute your tier tray turned out. I made one a while back but nothing as clever as yours.
Thank you Terrie! 🙂
That turned out cute, and what a great way to use up leftovers!
Thanks Cherryl! I like to repurpose as much as I can! 🙂
Clever idea!
Thanks! 🙂
This looks great! I love how you added the decor to the sides of it. Great idea!
Thank you Jenny! I want to add more as soon as I have time to wait for glue to set, ha ha! 🙂
That is just so clever, I love it. I too save all kinds of goodies, hubby calls it junk, for using in other projects.
Thanks Joyce! I’m always thinking about how I can use something before I throw it away. It’s especially hard for me to part with anything metal or glass! 🙂
Looks like you had a lot of fun planning and painting to get the end product. Hope you get years of enjoyment out of it. I’ll bet I’m not the only one who could probably assemble one of my own!
I did have a lot of fun with it Lydia! It’s like a puzzle to me! 🙂
I can’t get over your “I may need this someday” shelf. I want one, LOL. Made a few tiered trays and found the best glue was definitely 36000 (took a lot of broken glass and pulled apart trays before I figured that one out). Great tutorial to show that you can make a tiered tray to fit anyone’s style.
Ha ha! I think all makers need one of those shelves! I usually find a use for the things on there eventually. That glue is definitely the best for things like this! I glued a door knob to it’s base plate & screwed it to a piece of wood. My hair dryer hangs from it now & it’s still secure!
What a great way to use up some of your supplies!
Thank you Roseann! 🙂
What a unique combination of items to produce the tier, but SOO COOL! And painting helps it all come together. Perfect!
Thank you Alexandra! Paint is my favorite way to make odd pieces fit together. 🙂
Oh man, this makes me think about all the kitchen stuff I’ve donated. I could have made one of these! Love the hidden space in the tin too!
I’m always second guessing things I’m going to donate! Sometimes I have to just let it go cause there’s only so much space on my “might need it” shelf! 😀
I am a huge fan of your secret cookie storage! I have several boxes of random bits and pieces like you do, too! I think they come in handy when whipping up a DIY masterpiece like your tiered tray!
Thank you Habiba! It’s always fun to figure out ways to repurpose those bits & pieces into something new. : )
It looks great, you are very creative Kristie! Love the tiny scissors
Thank you Pili! 🙂
