Today I’m releasing Part 2 of the crocheted pixel & lace heart scarf pattern! The scarf works up really fast, even with the border. There is also a bit of surface crochet for the scarf, but it’s really easy to do. The written pattern & graph for the heart & surface crochet is at the end of this post. You will also find a video tutorial for the first & second part on my YouTube channel. Let’s get crocheting!
Single Crochet and Surface Crochet
The first row of the border consists of single crochets and slip stitch surface crochet. I’ve given directions in the written pattern to use either this technique or just doing a single crochet border around the whole scarf. These pictures are for the surface crochet technique.
You will join the border thread at the apex of the first heart & sc in every stitch, with 2 sc at the corners, until you reach the corner where two hearts meet. This is where my crochet hook is in the picture below. The sl st go across the surface of the bottom of the boxes. Just find a loop to put your hook in & make a sl st. : )
You’ll be going down one side & up the other until you get to the corner on the opposite side. Then you will crochet down the side of the second heart. Here’s a picture of the first heart with surface crochet across the bottom:
When you do the surface crochet, you’re going to alternate which side of the scarf you are on below each heart. This will allow you to come back up from the end & fill in the missing pieces. Hopefully this picture helps illustrate what I’m talking about.
On the return trip back up the scarf, you will want to sl st into the sc at the corners where two hearts meet. This will keep your border together, so you don’t have gaps in it.
This is what it looks like after the sl st is made:
Then you would just continue across the bottom of the heart with the sl st surface crochet. Once you’ve made it back to the beginning, sl st in the first sc. Then you can start the second row of lace which is just sc & ch 3.
Sl st back to the beginning & start the final row of lace which makes a picot edge. Almost done!
Fasten everything off & weave in the ends your scarf is done!
I can hardly wait for cooler weather to wear it! : )
Pattern
This is broken down by each part of the heart. I have noted that you will need to refer to this post & the video for the surface crochet portion. I feel it won’t make much sense without the pictures and/or video! : )
Note ~> This pattern uses the corner to corner {C2C} method {great tutorial at Make and Do Crew}. I’m using a triple crochet stitch for my C2C boxes instead of double crochet. You can find Part 1 instructions here. The written instructions assume the crocheter is familiar with C2C increases & decreases.

Supplies Used
I believe the Yarn Bee yarn I used has been discontinued, which is why it’s not linked. This was part of my Hobby Lobby clearance haul & I can’t find it on their website. I used Lion Brand Homespun to make the first heart pattern, so it’s a good alternative. Any #5 bulky weight would work. : )
- Pixel Hearts
- Yarn Bee Alpine Authentic in Neutral & Sidewalk Hopscotch {#5 bulky, 3.5 oz/100 g, 126 yd/115 m} ~ I used 2 balls to make a scarf with 12 hearts, 6 in each color, & I had a little bit leftover.
- I-9{5.5 mm} hook
- Lacy Border
- Lion Brand Heartland in Cuyahoga Valley {#4 worsted, 5 oz/142 g, 251 yd/230 m} – I used at least half, if not more of this ball of yarn.
- 7 {4.5mm} hook
The for hooks above are to single hooks. I used hooks from this set I purchased on Amazon, which I love!
Pixel Heart
Use this graph to help see when to decrease & which C2C boxes to skip.
row 1 ~ ch 7, tr in 5th ch from hook & in next two ch {1 box made}
row 2 ~ ch 7, turn, tr in 5th ch from hook & in next two ch, sl into ch 4 of first box, ch 4, 3 tr into ch 4 of first box {2 boxes made}
row 3-5 ~ Repeat row 2, adding one box per row until you have 5 boxes.
row 6 ~ Decrease for one row to have 4 boxes.
row 7 ~ Turn, sl st into the ch 4 & 3 tr of the last box {4 sl st}, make 1 more box; sl st 4 times across the ch 4 on the side of the box & sl st in center st of heart. Sl st in next 3 tr & ch 4 space {4 sl st}. Make one more box & fasten off.
Joining Hearts
You can join the hearts with your method of choice. The instructions below are for starting a new heart in the center of the last heart. I’ve continued the row numbers from above to help avoid any confusion.
row 8 ~ Join new yarn to top of the ch 3 in the 2nd box from the right in row 6., ch 4; 3 tr into ch 4 of joining box, sl st in ch 4 of 2nd box in row 7, sl st 3 more times. You should be at the top of the 2nd box from the right of row 7. {see pictures in part 1 post}
row 9 ~ ch 4, turn, 3 tr into ch 4 of box below, sl st to ch 4 of box from row 8, ch 4, 3 tr into ch 4 of box from row 8. {2 boxes made}
row 10 ~ ch 7, turn, tr in 5th ch from hook & in next two ch, *sl into ch 4 of first box, ch 4, 3 tr into ch 4 of first box* repeat * * twice {3 boxes made}
row 11 & 12 ~ Repeat row 10, adding one box per row until you have 5 boxes.
row 13 ~ Decrease for one row to have 4 boxes.
row 14 ~ Turn, sl st into the ch 4 & 3 tr of the last box {4 sl st}, make 1 more box; sl st 4 times across the ch 4 on the side of the box & sl st in center st of heart. Sl st in next 3 tr & ch 4 space {4 sl st}. Make one more box & fasten off.
Continue making hearts until your scarf is the length you want.
Lacy Border
There are two options for the first row of the lacy border. One option includes surface crochet between the hearts which I showed photos of in the post above. Continue to row 2 once you have finished the row 1 option you choose.
There are 4 stitches per block, so you should have 4 sc per block no matter what side of the block you are stitching in for row 1 of the lacy border.
Option 1 for Row 1 ~>
row 1 ~ Join the yarn to the heart center & chain 1. Put 1 sc into each stitch all the way around the border of the scarf. Sl st to first sc.
Option 2 for Row 1 ~>
Please see the photos above in the post & the video to see how to do this. I don’t think the written instructions will make any sense unless you see what I’m talking about.
row 1 ~ Join the yarn to the heart center & chain 1. Put 1 sc into each stitch up until you meet the 2nd heart. Rotate the work & sl st across the bottom edge of the first heart until you reach the opposite side of the scarf. Rotate the work so that you are working down the opposite side of the second heart. Sc in each stitch until you reach the 3rd heart. Rotate the work so you are on the back of the scarf & sl st across the bottom edge of the 2nd heart until you reach the opposite side of the scarf. Rotate the work so that you are working down the opposite side of the 3rd heart.
Continue in a zig-zag fashion down the entire scarf until you reach the last heart, then come back up the other side going in the opposite direction. You will have surface crochet slip stitches on both sides of the scarf between the hearts & single crochets around the entire border of the scarf. Sl st into the first sc.
Remaining Border ~>
row 2 ~ ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next stitch. Continue all around the scarf & sl st to first sc.
row 3 ~ *ch 3, skip first ch 3 loop below, sc into next ch 3 loop; ch 3 & sl st around base of sc {1 picot made}* repeat from * to * all around the heart & sl st to first sc.
Fasten off ends & weave them in, your scarf is ready to wear!

I don’t crochet but am wishing that I did. Lovely patterns. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Maybe you can find a crocheter to teach you or to make you one. 😉
And this is why I need to learn!! 💛
Yes – learn to crochet! I find it very relaxing. 🙂
