DIY Tiered Planter

I started cleaning off my back porch this week so we can make some repairs to the floor. During my cleaning, I rediscovered some items I forgot I had – imagine that! I gathered some of them together to make a tiered planter to add to one of my side gardens. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do! ; )

Pots & Rackets

This metal bucket & stand have been on my porch for much too long. It’s intended to be an ice bucket for drinks, but I’ve never used it for that! Inside the bucket were several clay pots & some ancient garlic bulbs, all sitting in about 1/2″ of water. Eww!

My porch is only partially enclosed – the top half only has screening between the openings. Anyway, I also found some, non-matching, badminton rackets left over from when my son was younger. The threading was rotten & broken, so I had an idea to use them to hold pots. My first attempt to bend the handle did not work out very well…

I also discovered the second racket had a wooden handle hidden under some black plastic. This handle just unscrewed from the frame.

I thought I might have to come up with a different idea, until I discovered the base for the handle was only held in place with rubber plugs. I removed the plugs with pliers, so I could rotate it about 9 degrees. To do this, I put the racket on my concrete steps with the end hanging over the step, stood on the frame, & whacked it a few times with a hammer. I also had to bend the frame of the rounder racket so the pot wouldn’t slide through.

It took me entirely too long to come up with this arrangement y’all! I was trying to separate the stand & use both large containers. Finally I realized, it just worked better to use the original configuration & turn the stand upside down.

This allowed me to remove the rubber plugs in the side spokes & stick the bent rackets in the ends. Time to clean things up!

Painted Plant Stand

I painted the stand & rackets with Rustoleum 2X Ultra Cover in Oil Rubbed Bronze.

I didn’t like the super shiny silver bucket, so I painted it with Rustoleum Chalked Spray Paint in Linen White. I’ve used this in two previous projects {here & here} & wasn’t impressed with the coverage or how easily it ran. I have to say, it worked very well for this metal bucket! There’s hope for it yet!

Next, I added the clay pots. Two are painted & one already had a blue glaze. I painted the pots to match my pot tower, but I’m not loving the whole combination.

I feel like the white is too, well, white!

Maybe I’ll like it better with plants in it or maybe I just need to dirty it up. Either way, I like the layout & can’t wait to plant some plants in it! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Pin it for later!
