I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! The temperature is dropping here and we are finally seeing some rain. It’s been over 2 months since it’s rained here, so it’s much needed. Today I’m going to show you how easy it is to make a fleece, flannel, and lace throw. This throw is perfect to cuddle under when it’s cold and dreary outside. It’s also great for those new to sewing and you can whip it up in 30 minutes to an hour. Let’s get sewing!

Supplies
I used things I had on hand in my work space. The lace won out because I didn’t have enough of the faux fur trim. The supply list is approximate and it really just depends on what size blanket you want. My finished blanket is about 42″ x 50″ with trim on the two shorter ends.
- Flannel – 1 1/2 yards
- Fleece – 1 1/2 yards
- Trim – I used 2″ wide lace because that’s what I had. Any trim will work for this.
One thing to think about is that fleece is usually 58″ wide and flannel is usually 42″ wide. Instead of aligning my selvages, I turned them opposite of each other. This allows me to use the width of the fleece as the length of the blanket and then the blanket is approximately the width of the flannel – minus some seams. If you want the blanket wider, you will have to sew two lengths of the flannel together.
Construction
The first thing I did is hem the ends of my lace. I didn’t have enough to go around the whole thing, so I cut it in half and put it across the two shorter ends. It was still a little short, but I still like it. I just trimmed the ends, folded them over twice, and stitched it down.
Trim all the selvage edges off the flannel and fleece. Lay out the fleece on the floor, face up, and smooth it out. Align the trim with the edges it’s to be attached to. Lay the flannel, face down, on top of the fleece and trim creating a fabric sandwich! Trim off any excess for the two sides with trim and one side without trim. Leave the 4th side long because fleece is a little stretchy and can move around when you sew it.
I used wonder clips to hold everything together.
Now sew all three of the trimmed sides together using a 1/2″ to 5/8″ seam. Sew it with the fleece on top to help prevent stretching. Lay the blanket back out and trim the 4th side. Sew the last side down, leaving a good size opening in the middle for turning it out. Clip all the corners and trim any excess.
Now turn everything right side out.
Almost done! Fold under the opening and clip it together.
Top stitch around the edges of the blanket, catching the opening in the stitching. I used the edge of my presser foot as a guide to be sure I caught the opening edges.
Now you have a cute and snuggly blanket for yourself or for a gift!
The possibilities for blankets is endless! There are so many flannel, fleece, and trims to choose from. I see more of these in my future!
