Easy Hanging Boo Sign + Free Pattern

Boo y’all!  Today I’m giving y’all the pattern to my “BOO” pillow I showed off in my Friday the 13th Favorites post.  I’m showing y’all how to use the same pattern to make a hanging BOO sign, since I don’t really need another BOO pillow!  Okay, let’s get spooky!  ; )

Reminders

Before I start this Halloween tutorial, I want to remind you of some Christmas giveaways going on.  Anyone getting holiday whiplash?  : D

Merry Christmas SAL ~> We have a fabric giveaway going on this month & you have to make both of this month’s patterns to qualify.  Monique released her October ornament pattern this morning, so be sure to go check that out!  Check out this post for more information & my October ornament pattern.

Merry Moosemas Quilt Kit ~>  Friday I showed off my finished {mostly!} Merry Moosemas quilt.  Wendy of Four Peaches Fabric is giving a kit away to one lucky reader, so check out this post for more details.

Now, back to Halloween!  Hee hee!

Supplies

The original pattern I made was used to make a stuffed pillow.  I’ve modified it a little to hopefully keep the “B” from being so narrow in some places.

Since I already have a “BOO” pillow, I decided to use the new pattern to make a hanging sign.  These are the supplies I used to make the sign.  I’ll give an alternative list below the picture for making the pillow.

  • template ~ this is a 3 piece template that needs to be taped together
  • fleece ~ (2) 13″ x 20″ pieces that contrast, find polka dot here & orange here
  • ribbon ~  I used about 24″ of a narrow silver ribbon I had on hand – similar here
  • scissors ~  I used pinking shears & fabric scissors {check out these vintage pinking shears!}
  • thread ~ I used a contrasting purple thread – you could also use fabric glue
  • drafting tape ~ not a necessity, but I found it easier than pinning with the bulky fabric.  Saw the tip in a Colette Snippets email!  : )

If you want to make the pillow, you will still need the template, scissors, & thread plus these items~>

  • fabric ~ (2) 13″ x 20″ pieces of a fabric that doesn’t fray easily, they can match or be contrasting {find some good Halloween fabrics here}
  • stuffing ~ I used polyfil because that’s what I had, fluffed batting scraps would work too

This post is about making the sign, but making the pillow is fairly similar.  I will give tips for making the pillow below the sign instructions.

Boo Hanging Sign

I cut out the “BOO” fabric with the pinking shears, just to have contrasting edges.  Once this was cut out, I laid it on top of the orange fleece, making sure there was overhang at every edge.

I sewed around all the center parts to help keep it in place.  Then I tucked the ribbon edges between the two pieces of fleece.  Pin in place, then sew around the whole outer edge.

Note ~>  The ribbon can be any length that you like.  I would make sure it’s long enough to hang over two points because this will fold in on its self if you hang it at one point.  You could also make two loops, one on each end.

Everything’s sewn down!  I just used the edge of my presser foot as a guide.

Then I used regular scissors to cut away the excess orange, leaving a little exposed.  You could always cut a slightly bigger piece of orange with the template then sew.

Now I have a perfect addition to my Halloween mantle!

Making the Pillow

To make the pillow, cut one piece of fabric with the “BOO” template facing up & one piece with the template facing down.  This is so you have a front & back for the pillow.

Lay the pieces wrong sides together & stitch around all the edges.  Leave an opening in each letter large enough to stuff.  Stuff each letter to desired puffiness & stitch openings closed.

Now you have a BOO to lay your head on!  : D

Be sure to come back here Wednesday for some DIY Halloween fun!
