Giant Paper Roses ~ Pinterest Challenge

Welcome to the January Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop {and y’all too} to not just pin, but to make it happen! Now, let’s look at what I picked for the first challenge of 2019! I have a ton of pins about making flowers from paper, but I have never tried any of them. This month I picked this pin about making a giant paper rose from Dream Posy. They will be perfect to use in decor for Valentine’s day & Spring!

Paper Choices

In the original post they have a written & video tutorial. I got confused in the written part, so the video seemed more helpful to me. There are free printable templates as well, which I found very handy! The tutorial shows plain pink paper & the video shows white paper with watercolor on the edges. I picked out some double sided mid-weight card stock with a print on both sides.

I used tracing paper to trace one petal onto a piece of card stock. Then I cut it out & used it as a template to trace around for the rest of the petals.

I realized I needed more paper, so I picked out some that coordinated, but only had a print on one side.

I cut out a total of 18 petals & two leaves.

Making the Flower

Be sure to pay attention to what order you’re going in! You start with the center & work your way out, which makes total sense. I thought I was starting with the bottom for some reason & had to start over. That’s why the first pick is a different color than what you’ll see in the second pic!

There are two base shapes, a triangle & a hexagon, which you use to layout the petals. The center has 3 petals.

Then you roll it up & hot glue it a some of the edges.

The hardest part about this is trying to not glue your fingers! Since some of my paper was one sided, I glued it to the centers with the print facing down. This will allow the print to show when you fold it around the center. Here’s the bottom of the second layer…

You curl it with a pencil…

Then wrap and glue…

I missed the part about splitting the centers of the last layer. So, I left them mostly flat with some curled edges.

The leaf template only has the pointed edge on one side, so you have to flip it if you want it on both sides.

I creased the center & drew in some leaf veins with a color pencil.

Here’s the finished flower….

Not to bad for my first one!

I want to make more of these & maybe try out the watercolor technique next time.

Well, that was pretty fun! The only part that’s a bit tricky is curling the edges & sticking them in a place that looks “flower-y”.  : )
