This year I’m teaming up with Crochet Creations by Christi to host a Happy Scrappy Yarn Challenge. Each month we will issue a challenge to help you use up those yarn scraps & single skeins you have tucked in nooks & crannies around your house. There will be prizes each month as well, so keep reading to find out all the yarny details & the yarn challenge for March!
Happy Scrappy Yarn Challenge Rules & Such
Christi & I will be alternating months. I’ll be sharing the challenge for January & she’ll be sharing the yarn challenge for February. It will go back & forth like that all year long. Whoever is responsible for the challenge that month will also be responsible for the prize. We will share challenges & prizes on our YouTube channels & in the Facebook group. I’ll also be doing a monthly blog post about all the challenges.
For this challenge, we have set up a joint Facebook group so there’s a place to share all your fabulous makes. The first thing you need to do to participate is join the group. You can also follow along on Christi’s YouTube channel & my YouTube channel. Here are some other things to know:
- Challenges will be issued on the first Thursday each month, with the exception of January. This is the 2nd Thursday, but I had a lot going on at the beginning of the year y’all! : )
- You will have until the end of the month to enter your project in the Facebook group. It must be related to the challenge for the month to be eligible for the prize that month. Please only share makes related to the challenge. That’s what the group is for after all!
- If you love yarn, you can participate in the challenge! This challenge is for all yarn lovers – crocheters, knitters, loomers, weavers, etc. The only limitation is that your project should be made mostly with scraps and/or single skeins of yarn & fit the challenge for the month.
I think that should cover all the rules & such. If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments here or on YouTube or in the Facebook group.
Yarn Challenge for March ~ Home Decor
March is my month to choose a theme! I chose home decor because we usually get into a spring cleaning mode about this time of year. Time to shake off the winter doldrums & welcome spring with some fun yarny home decor! There’s so many options with this challenge, so I’m dividing them by types of home decor. Really, if you can decorate your house with it, it’s fair game! : D
Rugs
I found so many patterns for rugs! This is a great way to use up scraps & add some fun color to your space.
- Linen Stitch Scrap Rug from Stitches n Scraps – Great scrap buster & beautiful results!
- How to Crochet a Scrap Yarn Rope Bath Mat from Mama in a Stitch – This would be great for other rooms too!
- Crochet Shag Bath Mat Tutorial from MJs off the Hook Designs – Although they use a specific yarn, I think this technique would be great for scraps too.
- Crochet Pebbles Rug from Thomasina Cummings Designs – Very interesting & so many possibilities!
- DIY Anti Slip Shaggy Rug from jesy azalia DIYs – Great tutorial!
- DIY Latch Hook Rug from A Beautiful Mess – I used to do latch hook as a kid, but I have no idea where my projects went!
- Latch Hook Rag Rug with Knit Scraps from Teadoddles – Although this uses knit scraps I’ve cut into strips, I thought I’d include it. If you’ve got any t-shirt yarn, that will work too!
Pillows
Pillows are a great way to add some spring color without doing a whole makeover. If you don’t have an pillow forms laying around, think about making a cover for a current throw pillow. You can also use a folded blanket in as well. : )
- Caron Crochet & Cross Stitch Maker Pillow from Yarnspirations – A fun one for your maker space!
- Crochet Snake Seat Cushion from Golden Lucy Crafts – Not your usual seat cushion! : D
- Chunky Knit Pillow Cover from The Little Yellow Wheelbarrow – So squishy!
- Yarn Fringe Pillow DIY from A Beautiful Mess – This tutorial uses yarn to update an existing pillow.
- Colorful DIY Pom Pom Pillow from Flamingo Toes – Great scrap buster!
- DIY Punch Needle Pillow from North Shore Crafts – Never tried punch needle before but it looks like fun!
Baskets
Baskets have a double function – storage plus decor!
- Easy Knit Basket from The Little Yellow Wheelbarrow – Such cuties!
- Easy Crochet Basket from North of Normal Knots – Love the name of this blog!
- Your Giant Yarn Basket from Oombawka Design Crochet – Um, yes please!
- Spikes Yarn Basket from Gleeful Things – This is perfect for scraps!
I have a crochet pattern coming out next week for a granny stitch basket. Here’s a sneak peak:
I’m also going to do a tutorial for crocheting over thicker yarn & how I made this basket…
This & That
Just some fun ideas that are great for sprucing up your home decor.
- Yarn Tassels from Real Purday – These are great for pillows, curtain tie backs, & so much more!
- Colorful Clock Work from Retrobaby – Give that boring clock a makeover! I might try this on the clock in my classroom. : )
Okay, I could go on and on and on with this, but I have to stop somewhere! I didn’t include afghans & blankets on this list, but I would consider those home decor as well. Most people were looking for things to do with scraps other than blankets. Hope y’all enjoyed the post & happy making y’all! 😀
