Past Challenges

Only one to show for this year, but you can check out this post for a list of 2018 challenges.

Now, let’s look at what I picked for the February’s challenge! In looking through my pins, I realized I have many pins for making different kinds of feathers. I was particularly inspired by this pin for denim feather wall decor from Pillar Box Blue. Then I thought, why not try out some others as well? So, here’s my take on making feathers of all kinds!

Denim Feathers

I started with the original post & made denim feathers first. I have tons of denim scraps so I just grabbed a little of this and a little of that…

There is a pattern template provided in the post, but I decided to free-hand it. My twine is just standard brown.

I used Aleene’s Tacky glue to hold down the twine instead of the fabric Mod Podge used in the post.

Waiting for it to dry…

Then it was time to pull out all the opposite threads. So. Much. Fun. Bleh!

It did leave me with a beautiful result & I love that I was able to keep the flower embroidery!

As you can see, I’ve only finished two of all the ones cut out! It takes a good bit of time to pull out all the opposite threads, so I’ll finish them later – when I have nothing better to do. ; D

Embroidery Thread Feathers

The next feather I decided to make came from this pin for embroidery thread feathers from Infarrantly Creative. First to pick out some colors…

I settled on some gradient blue & green embroidery thread….

And I also decided to try this grass/paper covered wire since I didn’t have the fabric covered kind shown in the original post.

The instructions were to cut the strands into 3″ pieces. Each loop of thread was 6″, so I cut the loop ends, then cut it in half. I wound up using only half of the blues I cut…

I skipped the part about wrapping the wire with thread first, it seemed unnecessary to me. Time to start tying some knots…

And more knots….

And finally I’m finished! So tedious!

In the original post, they soaked the whole thing in fabric stiffener to help hold its shape. I decided to skip this step as well because I liked the movement of it. Plus I didn’t want to wait for something else to dry, but that’s beside the point!

The top is kind of chopped off looking, but I still like it.

I do like the way the colors blend together…

I just don’t think I’ll be making another one of these anytime soon. So many knots!

Macrame Feathers

For my third feather I picked this pin for macrame feathers from Honestly WTF. Being that I didn’t have any macrame cording, I tried using this nylon crochet thread I had in my stash.

Yeah, that’s just sad, but it did give me an idea for future Halloween decorations! : D

Next, I moved on to my yarn scrap bin…

I picked out some fluffy fibers & gave it another go!

That’s more like it!

Time for a trim & fluff…

This one’s more feather-ish, but I do love the fluffiness!

Fabric Feathers

The last one on my list was this pin for fabric feathers from Live Master. I plucked some scraps from my 3″ bin to try it out.

I layered the pink speckled fabric strip over the muslin strip & pinned more of the wire between the two.

The original post calls for gluing {again} & hand stitching over the center. I opted to stitch around the wire with my zipper foot. Then I did a satin stitch over the center using an open toe embroider foot. I had to drop my feed dogs & sort of work it down manually.

Trim it into a feather shape…

Then it’s time for more thread pulling – yay! Did you feel the sarcasm there? ; D

I think this one is my favorite!

All of these were fun to try, but they took way longer than I expected. Well, except for the macrame one. They did all leave behind a nest of thread or fuzz…

More to Try!

I’ve also got this pin for tunisan crochet feathers from Poppy & Bliss and a pin for crocheted feathers from Crochet Repulic on Ralvery inspired by Regina Rioux that I’d like to try out. I think these will look good hanging in my mixed media frame on the mantel shelf

Pinterest Inspired Projects

46 Comments on Making Feathers of All Kinds ~ Pinterest Challenge

  1. Those look like a lot of work, but at least you went for it. Good job, that’s what The Pinterest Challenge is all about. I’m sitting here looking at a complicated craft I need to start myself. Your feathers have inspired me to get going.

  2. I love the colors of the embroidery floss one the best but you got so many wonderful textures and sizes going on here! Pinned.

  3. I love it when people try a to make something with several different techniques. These are so cool! I agree with your favorite…that’s my favorite, too.:) I’ll have to look into that open toe embroider foot…

    • Thanks Crissy! I was hoping I had a cording foot or something similar that would fit over the stem. The open toe foot worked well because I could see the center. I did have to lift & move the work a little at the time as I went along.

  4. Wow, what an ambitious project! Just one would have been impressive. And what an amazing stash of materials you have too. Great detailed tutorials on each feather.

    • Thank you Debbee! It was fun to do & I’d like to make more of the fabric ones. My stash has been accumulating over many, many years! Projects like this are perfect to help use some of it up! : D

  5. Gee, I want to try these techniques! You know feathers like these are very trendy and quite popular right now, Kristie! I’ve actually been meaning to try this. I think the feathers are quite cool! Great tutorial for sharing this with us!

    • Thank you Gail! I’ve always loved feathers! I think it would be neat to have them grouped in a vase with flowers or just together. I’m glad you enjoyed the post! 🙂

    • Thank you Erlene! I’d like to give the macrame one another try with actual macrame cording. It looks so different! 🙂

  6. Wowza, you have been busy! I love all of them, I think I’ve pinned most of these ideas myself!
I made denim tassels so I know how long pulling all those threads can take! A great thing to do whilst watching tv I think!
I think the fabric one is my favourite too. I have some shiny upholstery scraps that are hanging about, I wonder if they would work?

    • Thanks Julie! I did watch YouTube & Netflix while making these! The upholstery fabric may or may not work. It really depends on the weave of the fabric. Upholstery fabrics usually have bigger threads & are sometimes embossed, which makes the threads stick together. I would just give it a try & see what happens! : D

  7. Omgee…love that you just wing it or eyeball to save time. Also love your honesty. Your feathers look amazing but I don’t think I have the patience you do. My fave is the jean feather. Great post.

  8. How cool! I love that you tried several techniques to see which you liked best. It’s interesting how each one has a slightly different texture. All of your feathers together make a lovely collection! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures

  9. You were cracking me up with the commentary. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a project and reached a point where I was sighing and fussing because it got a little tedious.
That being said, it’s obvious you can get nice results from these projects. It’s a matter of finding the technique you like best.

    • Haha! I thought this was going to be such a simple project! It really isn’t hard, it’s just very time consuming! : D

  10. Real feathers give me the creeps so same as you I have a lot of Pins about how to make feaux feathers. But I’ve never put them to use. I love that you tried out several techniques and give us your oppinion. I think I like the embroidery thread, macrame and fabric feathers the best. Pinning your Pin to the lot, lol.
