It’s time for the Merry Christmas Sew-Along ~ Ornament #9! This is my last ornament design & can’t believe we’ve almost reached the end of the sew-along. It’s been so much fun seeing everyone’s version of the ornaments!
As I mentioned before, I’ve partnered with my friend Monique of Farm House Quilts to bring y’all 10 ornament patterns we designed over the next 5 months – all for FREE! We know what the “theme” is each month, but we haven’t seen each others designs. That means we get to be surprised too when it’s not our turn to post! Okay, let’s get to the merry ornament making!

Ornament #9 ~> Christmas Star
This month Monique & I decided not to follow a theme. We each chose something different for the last ornament! I chose to do a star ornament to represent the Christmas star. There’s the standard cut out ornament & a crazy quilted paper piece background to add if you like!
We’ve always put a star on top of our Christmas tree, but I know some people put an angel on the top. While I don’t have a story to tell for this ornament {besides the fact that I sing “O Holy Night” in my head every time I see it}, I do have a link for you. I found this article about the origins of the Christmas star interesting & thought you might too! : )
Christmas Star
This pattern does not have a placement guide. The points of the inner star align with the points of the outer star, so it’s really not necessary. If you make the crazy quilted paper piece background, just center the star as you like. It’s not meant to be perfect! ; )

Cut-Out Ornament Instructions
These pieces are large enough to list some basic sizes to cut from ~>
- A ~ 5″ x 7″ {inner star}
- B ~ 5″ x 7″ {outer star}
I sewed the star with the same method I used for the wonky tree ornament. The only difference is that I cut it out with pinking shears.
You may find this easier than the method shown for the first ornament because of the star points.
Crazy Quilt Paper Piecing
When I first sketched up this design, I wanted the whole thing to be paper pieced. After fiddling around with it a little, I decided to just do a paper pieced background that could be added. I’m not giving instructions for paper piecing in this post, but you can check out this post for more instruction & another free pattern. : D
I did want to show you that you can leave off some of the “rounds” of crazy quilting. In this photo, the fabric is wide enough to leave off the last two rounds if I wanted to.
All you need to do is make sure the fabric of the last round you want to make is wide enough to cover the edge of the pattern. Here’s how it looks with all the rounds completed & layered on top of batting~>
I added the “outer star” next & stitched around all the edges through all the layers.
I added the “inner star” next. Since it’s a white fabric, you can see some of the pattern from the fabric below, which I really like!
Now it’s all stitched down! The pattern has the center lines marked if you need them. I also stitched around the edge of the rectangle.
Using a rotary cutter, I trimmed & squared every thing up. I haven’t added a backing to this yet because I’m thinking about putting it in a quilt. Right now it’s sitting on my mantel shelf…
And here’s all the ornaments from the sew-along hanging out with the stockings! They fit right in with the rest of my Christmas decor!
We have one more ornament to go & it will be out next Monday! Be sure to check out Farm House Quilts for the last ornament & I can’t wait to see everyone’s version of the
You’ll be able to find all the links to the ornament posts & other social things on the page for the SAL. I can’t wait to see everyone’s ornaments for this month!
