I’ve been up to my ears in fabric this weekend! Right now I’m still in the midst of it & I’m determined to get done! My fabric stash needed a reboot because I have more fabric coming in than going out. Not a super bad thing, but it’s taking over my sewing space. It’s time to finish taming the stash even if it takes the rest of the week!

The Dilemma
Okay, so maybe it’s not a dilemma, but it’s definitely a problem that needs addressing. I started cutting my scraps into squares & strips a while back. The intent was to have them ready to sew when I got ready to use them. Unfortunately they are just laying in my way on my fabric shelf & I never finished!
Then my lovely aunt found two boxes full of fabric for $20 at an estate sale. What self declared fabricaholic could say no to that? The box on the left is for keeps & the box on the right is leaving the nest. At least I didn’t keep it all!
All of that has made for lots of chaos in the sewing room! Time for a reboot!
Rebooting
In my last post about my stash I showed y’all the bin where most of my scraps wind up. It was organized by color & held all sorts of fabric scraps.
This wasn’t really working for me, so I decided it was time to start sorting it out. Back to the cutting!
The first thing I did was divide out the apparel scraps from the quilting scraps. The bin will house all the apparel scraps because I don’t use them as often. All fleece, minky, terry cloth, etc. scraps will go on the bottom layer.
I cut all my knit scraps into strips & stretched them for yarn.
This goes on the second layer with the heavy weight apparel scraps.
The top layer of the bin holds light weight apparel fabrics, mini triangle & tag scraps, & leather scraps.
Then I made a “fancy” label for the front to remind me what’s where in the bin.
I’m starting to label my larger yardages of fabric with tags, indicating how much & fabric type.
I’ve got a small pile of scraps to finish cutting & sorting into squares & strips. {bottom left}
I’ve got a stack of fat quarters & mid sized cuts sorted as well.
These little bins hold sorta special pieces. From left to right:
- Pieces with iron on adhesive on the back.
- Pieces like flaps, straps, & special bits I want to keep.
- Triangle pieces of various sizes. {project plan!}
My two small scrap bins are for micro scraps {short} & odd strips {tall}.
All this is great except…..
That’s all the shelf space I have right now for all those cuts & fat quarters! Time for some rearranging!
