Definition of Normal
Let’s take a look at what the word “normal” actually means (because I’m a word nerd):
“conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected”
Can I just say I’m mentally gagging at the “conforming” part? It makes me feel like I’m part of some robotic army! No thank you! I like to make my own way and have since I was a small child. My dad had to build steps to my crib because I would climb out and play with my toys when they were sleeping. At the age of 2 I was mixing up puzzles to make it a little more challenging to put back together. Yes, I actually remember things I did when I was 2! Nothing about me has ever been really “normal”.
When I showed my son the shirt I was thinking of picking he said “Yeah, that’s a good one for you because you act weird sometimes”. I related this story to my husband and I could see in his face that he agreed, even though he was trying to hide it. It’s okay, I know I’m weird!
Be Extraordinary
So, what does all this have to do with the shirt I chose and how I’m applying to my 2017 goals? As a child, I didn’t keep my weirdness in check. I didn’t really care if I dressed in what was popular or had the latest hairstyle (still don’t). One year I got an award for having the most colorful footwear! Somewhere along the way in this crazy life that weirdness, that uniqueness, that ME-ness got squashed down.
This year I’m bringing back the weird y’all! Just to be clear, I’m talking about this definition of weird:
“of strange or extraordinary character”
Doesn’t that sound so much better than “conforming”? Everyone has a uniqueness to them, so I encourage you to let that out! You’ll never know your full potential until you embrace what makes you – well -you! I’m challenging myself this year to be extraordinary in everything that I do. I want to break away from the normal, the standard, the “conforming”. I want more “oh wow!” and “that’s awesome!”
Basically I’m saying – get out of your boxes people it’s hard to breath in there!
This shirt from Cents of Style will remind me to keep more weirdness in my life, so I can reach my full potential and – like my tag line says – have a “life lived”!
Maybe you have different motivation for the year or want to send a different message to the world. No worries! Find a shirt with your message at Cents of Style.
By the way, my son took these pictures for me! We had so much fun, as you can see, and I think he did a really good job! Y’all have a great weekend and remember to be extraordinary!
