Now, let’s look at what I picked for this month’s challenge. Since Thanksgiving is this week, I decided to pick something from my Thanksgiving board. It was mostly food pins, but I did find this pin for Pumpkin Pie Thanksgiving Garland from Less Than Perfect Life of Bliss. I thought it would be the perfect thing to “whip up” for this coming Thursday – ha ha! Since I really love pecan pie as well, it was only fitting to add a slice to my garland. Thus the pecan & pumpkin pie garland was born!
Cutting Triangles
In the original post, felt was used for the pie slices. I didn’t have any felt in those colors, so I’m using some cotton & burlap.
She listed sizes for the pie slices in her post & I followed those measurements. Using tailor’s chalk & a quilting ruler made this much easier to do!
I thought I was saving time by stacking up everything & cutting it up all at once. However, you’re supposed to make the backing taller in the back than the front fabric. This gives you a place to glue on the crust & twine.
Oh well! I certainly wasn’t going to re-cut all the backings. I wound up with enough to make two banners!
The post called for gluing things together with a hot glue gun. I decided to do the same. Just a quick note – if you’re gluing burlap, you may want to put everything on wax paper. I may, or may not, have glued some of these to the table! : P
Time to make these look more like pie!
Pumpkin Pie
For the pumpkin pie I chose to use cotton balls for the whipped topping.
I smooshed them around a bit to get some peaks, but that didn’t really stick too well! It looked a little too peachy to me, so I brushed them with some distress ink. This should really have been done before I glued on the cotton balls!
It looks pumpkin pie-ish I suppose…
Pecan Pie
For the pecan pie, I decided to use a mix of different glitters to give it that golden touch.
Hot glue was no good for this, so I used Aleene’s Tacky Glue & a paint brush.
And then I had glitter pie! : D
It was still missing something…pecans! I cut some pecan-ish shapes out of brown felt then made some creases with a sharpie.
I glued those to the pie parts with hot glue.
Guess that’s pecan pie-ish! : P
Banner Finish
The crust piece is what helps hold the twine in place. I used strips of burlap for this.
This is where that taller back piece would have been great to have. Especially on my pumpkin pie because my whipped cream dollop was a little big!
All in all it fits right in with my rustic, eclectic mantel shelf…
Since I had enough for two, I’ll see if my mom wants one for her mantel. Check out this post, this post, & this post for more information about the other projects on the mantel.
Here’s a picture of real pecan & pumpkin pie…
I think that’s much more enticing! You can find a recipe for my pecan pie right here. Be sure to check out all the other Pinterest Challenge projects below!
