I’ve had this pin in the back of my mind for a minute! I knew when I started using the drawers from my old dresser, this would be one of the projects. This paint storage solution was the perfect thing for this month’s Pinterest Challenge!

So this month, I chose to create/make this DIY Craft Paint Storage I pinned from Sadie Seasongoods.
Drawer to a Shelf
This will be the 3rd project I’ve made with a drawer from my old dresser. I used one for a dog bed & the second for some much needed vertical storage. There’s one more drawer left, so that means one more project waiting to be made!
The drawer I’m using is much larger than the one in the original post. This is good, since I have lots of paint!
I bought two 1/4″ x 4″ x 24″ poplar boards to make the shelves.
My dad helped me cut the boards down to fit the drawer. One board was cut in half & the second was cut into 4 pieces. This gave me one full width shelf & 3 half width shelves.
Dad had some scrap wood that we used for ledges for the shelves. He cut a 10 degree miter to help the shelves tilt back slightly. The original post called for a 15 degree miter.
Dad also cut a piece for each side to act as a spacer between each ledge & a piece to wedge between the two sides. This helped hold the pieces in place while the wood glue dried.
Wood glue was better for this drawer because the sides are too thin for nails. Once the glue was dried, we put it to the test!
Well, it functions, so now it’s time to make it pretty!
Painting the Paint Shelf
I really liked the kitschy paper in the back of the original shelf. I found this thicker tissue paper in my stash & knew it was perfect! This time I used spray adhesive instead of Modge Podge.
I painted the ledges & one side of the shelves with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Vintage {one of my faves!}.
The front panel, front & back, got a coat of a new color I bought recently, Victorian.
I also gilded the edges with some metallic lustre in gold rush. I decided to keep the handles & used Rustoleum spray paint in oil rubbed bronze again.
The back of the back panel also got a coat of Victorian. Everything else was left as raw wood & I coated everything with Americana Decor Clear Wax.
I plan on hanging this on the wall, but I needed to see if it would hold all my paint.
It holds everything but my spray paints! I need to put some dots on the lids so I can tell what color is what more easily.
I love how this turned out & I may be using my last drawer for my spray paint! Be sure to check out all the other blogger’s Pinterest Challenge picks!
Pint it for later!

I like this idea! I don’t really have room on my wall for hanging anything, but it gives me some ideas for how to use my closet space more efficiently. Thank you for sharing. Pinned for later!
She always has great things to pin! It would be great in a closet space as well. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Perfect storage solution! We have so many bottles of acrylic paint and so few places to put them all. Pinned.
I knew it was the perfect solution when I found it! It can hold a little or a lot depending on the drawer size 🙂
This is an awesome use of an old drawer! And wow, it really holds a lot of paint! My suggestion would be to put a dot of paint on the caps that don’t have the color already on them so that you can easily find your color quickly.
Thank you Laurie, that was exactly what I thought about doing! I tried turning them with the cap facing in, but the shelf is too short for that. The weight of the paint makes them want to tip out!
Such a creative use of an old drawer and sooooo much storage, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Kelley!
This is a clever use for the drawer Who would have thought that an old drawer could have such a practical use! .
I love finding new uses for drawers! I’m hoping to find some orphaned ones for some other projects I have in mind. 🙂
What a great way to use a drawer! I love the paper you chose and the way the top shelves are shorter for the paint bottles. Great job!
Thanks! I’ve been saving that paper for a long time & this was the perfect project for it!
What a great idea to reuse a drawer to hold paint. I love the tissues paper on the shelfs. Pinning!
Thank you Jenny!
Great idea! Next time I demo a kitchen or bathroom with big drawers, I’m going to snag one.
Definitely!!
That turned out great. Great choice
Thanks Deborah!
That is a great idea, love the paper you used. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Guida! That paper has been in my collection for a long time. 🙂
Your chest of drawers has really come in handy for upcycled items! I love that you thought to use one for paint storage! That’s a terrific idea! I keep my paint bottles turned upside down so I can see the colors and I would love to find drawers to use instead. Thanks for the wonderful idea!
Yes it has Gail! I’ll be turning the frame into an open shelf eventually. I was hoping to turn my paint bottles that way, but the shelf is too short & it makes it unbalanced. Thank you for stopping by! 🙂
Clever idea! I often see drawers at the flea market and wonder what I could do with one. Love this! Pinned
Thank you Lisa!
Wow, you have gotten good use of those drawers. This one is really handy. I like that you used spray adhesive because I bet it was quicker. I’d just turn the bottles around so you can see the paint color on the bottom. Nice and frugal storage, my kind of project!
The spray adhesive was definitely quicker! I tried turning the bottles around, but the shelf is too short & the bottles are too heavy to stay in! That’s what I get for being extra frugal & not wanting to buy another board! Haha!
This is a great storage idea. And a very good easy to follow tutorial. I just picked up some drawers from the curb. You are giving me ideas…
Thank you Debra! That’s what’s dangerous about this blog hop – more ideas to collect! 🙂
I am looking for something like this. right now my paints are stored in a box that is beginning to wear down. Really liked the paper you added to the back of your shelf. Gave me an idea for an old wine box I picked up at a yard sale. Thanks! It’s been pinned for later ;>)
Oh, a wine box would be wonderful for a shelf! Can’t wait to see what you do! Thank you for stopping by! 🙂
That’s just lovely: pretty, quirky and practical.
Thank you Julie! 🙂
