Recycled Paper Basket ~ Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop

• January ~> Making Decorative Paper Clips

This month, I chose to make some Recycled Paper Baskets from this PIN. I have a TON of this brown paper because anytime I receive a package with it, I save it! Time to use some of it & make it more use-ful!

Paper Folding

When I saw this pin, I immediately thought of the STACK of recycled paper & cardboard in my drafting table drawer. The paper I need for this project is on the far right.

I get this kind of paper all the time in delivery boxes. Mostly I use it for pattern tracing & sometimes wrapping.

The instructions for making this are fairly clear & straight forward. I’m just going to share some things I did differently. First, I used a ruler to help start the fold.

This made the strips 2″ wide versus the 1″ listed in the instructions. I also tucked the ends back into the folds, rather than leaving them on the outside.

I suggest finding something interesting to watch on Netflix while you fold up all these strips! ; )

Pressing all the strips with a hot iron will help hold the creases & smooth them out.

Stitching

I decided to use my heavy duty Singer to sew through these strips. I used a denim needle & denim thread for the stitching.  The only issue I had was some bird nesting on the back when I sewed too fast.

The speed was making the thread jump out of the tension holders at the top.  I think this was just a vibration issue due to sewing through folds of paper.

The top stitch will look nicer than the bottom, because paper tends to pucker on one side when you punch it with a needle.

It will look like this on the bottom.

I pressed these with the iron one more time before weaving them together.

This part went much quicker than the folding!

The instructions show using hot glue to hold ends together. I used permanent running tape because I felt it was less messy. Plus I didn’t have to wait for it to dry.

All Finished

This basket turned out larger than I expected!

I had a little trouble getting the ends tucked in, but I think it turned out okay.

It holds a good bit of fat quarters!

But I decided to used to hold my tulle collection!  It looks much better than the old Easter basket I had it in.  : )

Originally I thought I’d make a bunch of these, but they take more time to make than I thought they would. I do have this roll of linen textured wall paper that may make it’s way into a basket one day!
