The Merry Moosemas Quilt Kit

Prepping the Fabric
This kit includes all the fabric you need for the quilt top & binding. You’ll need batting & about 3 yards fabric for the backing. Wendy carries the coordinating prints for the backing in her shop – yay! Before I start cutting the fabric, I’ll stack it in the order of the cutting chart. This just keeps me straight! ; )
I did not pre-wash this fabric or any part of this quilt. If I’m working with a higher quality, denser weave fabric, I find that shrinkage is minimal as long as you wash it properly. If a fabric has a looser weave or feels stiff, I will pre-wash it as it tends to shrink more. I did spray it down with starch & give it a good ironing. I like to spray the back & fold the fabric over as I go down it. Then the starch gets on both sides.
The center panel measurement was basically to the outer brown border. I just cut off the excess with scissors instead of a rotary cutter. When I need to cut on a line printed on the fabric, I find it easier to do with scissors.
Now the moose is ready!
Everything is all cut out & ready to sew! I even stitched and ironed my binding, so it would be ready for the big finish. : )
Look at all the fabric I have leftover! I’m thinking a coordinating pillow will be making an appearance soon!
Sewing the Pieces
Most of the pieces for this quilt are long border pieces, but there is one pieced border. I like to arrange the block how it will be pieces & stack everything up. One side was done before I remembered to take a picture. Oops!
Doing this makes it easier to keep things straight when chain piecing. My favorite way to sew! : D
I also keep things attached when ironing the seams. Hmmm…. one of these things is not like the others! How did that happen?
As you can see, things can still get mixed up sometimes! Once I have my two halves, I stack everything back up & do some more chaining.
My points are looking pretty fantastic – if I do say so myself!
The squares all get stacked & chain sewn too. Just remember there are an odd number of blocks in each row, so leave for out of the pile. You don’t want to have to bust out the seam ripper like I may or may not have had to do. ; 0
After I finished the pieced border, it was just a matter of straight line sewing & trimming to add all the borders to the center.
Quilting & Finishing
I decided to use a navy thread for the top & cream color on the bottom. Since this has mostly straight line borders, I used a combination of straight stitches & a wavy stitch.
I really like how this turned out! Just so y’all know, the binding is spray basted in these photos. I haven’t had a chance to stitch it down or wash it yet, but I still love it!
I used some flannels & leftover cuts to make the backing. This is my first patch work backing!
I’m in love with this quilt & can’t wait to use it for Christmas. I may just keep it by my thinking chair for now to keep warm – Christmas is my favorite! : D
