Placemat to Pillow

I found these 100% cotton placemats at our local discount store {Ollie’s} for $1.49 each. They had tons of colors & prints, but I thought these were perfect for some star spangled pillows.

The first thing I did was unpick the seam right where the tag was. I was going to take it off anyway! You just need a hole big enough to fit your hand inside.

Next, I grabbed a star template & some blue acrylic paint. I made this star a long time ago, but you could use a stencil to make a template.

After centering it, I held it down & dabbed paint around the edges with a stencil brush.

And then a star was born!

For the second pillow, I started by cutting out a strip of this flag fabric.

I didn’t like how it was looking so I pulled out this red ribbon…

Ultimately I decided to just keep the ribbon! I used Heat N Bond & just ironed it on to the placemat.

Make sure to use a grosgrain or natural fiber ribbon to do this. Satin ribbon will not work well under the iron! Here’s some good one’s to try out:

Once I was finished with the decor on the outside, it was time to stuff the inside. Then I just slip stitched the openings closed. Here are the finished pillows:

I think they add the perfect star spangled touch!
