This week I’ve been working on cleaning up & re-organizing my creative space. I needed to rearrange things a bit to make room for an overflow of yarn. Y’all, I think it’s multiplying when I’m not looking! I thought I’d share how I repurposed some things for unexpected yarn storage. Sometimes you have just what you need to organize a space & don’t even realize it!

Unexpected Yarn Storage
This little space between two doors only measures about 28″ wide. It’s not an easy place to find a shelf for! I found the shelf in the picture at a yard sale for $7. It will fold up flat to store when not in use, which is really neat!
The shelf used to hold all my gift wrapping supplies. I decided to move those into the guest room/office since it seemed like a better place for it. The large wire basket was $1 at a yard sale & gave it a makeover you can see in this post. I paid a bit more for the metal milk crate on the bottom. Lots of the yarn is in zippered plastic bags that sheets or blankets came in. I did this because the shelf is unfinished wood & could snag the yarn.
The metal rack above it is a thrifted water hose rack I painted red. I was quite delighted to find that my scrap yarn cakes fit in it perfectly!
The little purple basket holding my recycled t-shirt yarn was an Easter basket. My mother gave me that this Easter, haha! : D
The rack above the shelf is actually a laundry drying rack. I picked up two of them for $5 each on clearance at Wal-mart.
It’s a perfect place to hang empty {& maybe one full} project bags. I’m using S-hooks to hang them & a plastic shower ring works great for the larger handled bags.
This is another area I store yarn in…
The shelf was another $7 dollar thrifting find. It’s an old piece of IKEA furniture that used to be used to store toys. I guess it kinda still does hold “adult toys”, haha! ; )
And Cupcakes, my favorite!
I love my new yarn storage area! We won’t talk about the yarn in the other room….hehe! ; P
Hook Storage
During my cleaning spree I came across an old drawing pencil case my son had. He left it behind because he out grew it.
I decided it would work great for my crochet hooks & knitting needles! My knitting needles are in the plastic bag they came in so I can remember what size they are. I used a book ring to hold stitch markers on the elastic band.
The panels are removable & you can buy more to expand the storage.
I can even store extra snips in the slots!
The only thing that doesn’t fit in the slots are my metal hooks. They are too narrow, but the zipper pouch works great for them. I don’t use them as often anyway!
This is a great way to keep all my supplies together & works much better than the coffee cup I was keeping them in! I hope y’all enjoyed looking at some unexpected yarn storage. Have a great weekend!
That all looks great, you have organized it perfectly. Love the pouch from your son for the hooks, great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Guida! The pouch has been very helpful for me. I’m always looking for a hook, haha! : )
That all looks awesomely organized! That pencil case was a great repurpose…and I can’t believe how many crochet hooks you have!😳😉🤣. Enjoy!
Haha! I have to be prepared because you never know how many WIPs I may have going at once! 😜
