Utensil Holder Change-up

I have a lot of random items around my maker space that need to be turned into something amazing! I’m on a mission this summer to see how many projects I can make. This utensil holder has been sitting in a trunk at the end of my bed for who knows how long. It was on top, so it’s the first pick!

“These pots have holes in the bottom and it did show using it as a planter on the packaging. Of course, I can’t just use it like they suggested! I decided to turn it into a hanging “holder of whatever” and jazz it up a bit with my Cricut Maker.

First, I needed to make some holes in the side of the tray so I marked locations with a Sharpie. Tip – layout the containers before marking to make sure they fit. I may have forgotten to do this as indicated by the “extra” marks…..measure twice, cut once as they say!

I used a hammer and large wood nail to put holes in the side of the tray. Just set it on a piece of scrap wood to keep from damaging tables and such. You could use a drill to do this as well. For the containers, I made sure to put the hole by the seam in so it wouldn’t show.

Once I had the holes done, I removed the Sharpie marks with polish remover and inserted the S-hooks.

Now it was time to cut something fun for the tray with my Cricut Maker. I had a sample pack of adhesive vinyl that was perfect for this project.

This copper color was a good match to the copper handles on the tray. Make sure you put the vinyl face down on the mat and mirror your image before you cut. I learned this the hard way cause I didn’t read the instructions – duh!

I measured the tray interior to see how large the image could be to fit. Then I chose this “hay y’al” image from a SVG I purchased on The Hungry JPEG site. I realized later that “y’all” really should have two L’s!

After it was all weeded out, I applied the transfer tape, which is supposed to help move the image from the backing to the new surface. Try as I might, I could not get it to stick to the transfer tape!

That means I had to use my tweezers and a steady hand to transfer the image. Turned out fairly well for having to do it piece by piece.

There were some issues as you can see if you zoom in….

But from a distance, it looks like I knew what I was doing! I may have also put the image on upside down and had to redo my holes – oops!

Now I just have to figure out a way to hang it on the wall. I’ll be sharing that on my YouTube channel, so stay tuned! And if anyone knows of a trick to transfer shiny vinyl, I’m all ears y’all!
