So this month, I chose to try out using nail polish to make watercolor glass. I have several pins showing how to to this, but the tutorial from House of Hipsters seemed the easiest to follow. She used plain white mugs in her post however, I’m using glass containers of different sorts. I’ve always wanted to try this & it looks super simple!
The Supplies
I have so many bottles of finger nail polish, but I rarely paint my nails. When I do, it’s usually only the toenails. DIY projects are rough on manicures! I chose various blues & purples & one sparkly black for this project.
I wanted to try this technique out on some jars I had on hand. The large one is a recycled pasta jar, then there’s a flip top Dollar Tree jar, & a box of mini mason jars.
The only other things you’ll need are water & something to hold the water. Make sure it’s something it’s okay to mess up!
The original post said to drop the polish in the water from the jar, not the brush. I didn’t really follow that rule! It also said you could use a skewer to blend it, but that didn’t work for me…
Although this looks like a melted unicorn horn, it’s just all the polish I just put in the water! I’m thinking this happened because I was doing this under a ceiling fan running full blast. The polish just dried too fast to stir it. So yeah, don’t do that! ; )
The Finished Products
Once I realized I didn’t need to stir, everything else was pretty easy.
It does take more of a swooping action to keep the polish from wrinkling. You can see that a little bit in this photo…
I just used the black sparkly polish on this jar. You can see the sparkles, but it doesn’t really show up in the picture.
This is one of my favorites…
I realized after you drop the first few drops, it spreads way out. Then you can put more drops on top of it & it doesn’t spread out much at all.
This gives it more of a splattered look than a watercolor look.
Another favorite…
This last one is not that great. I tried to wipe it off because it wrinkled up & that did not work! I used it to catch leftovers in the water after that.
All in all, this was a fun, quick project! I keep these jars to fill with small gifts & now they have a little more pizzazz. : )

Very pretty bottles! The variety & colors are pretty, They will make great gift jars!
Thank you Jenny! 🙂
Oh I did something similar with mugs! Using jars and different colors is also a great idea!!
I saw that when I linked my post! It’s funny how often people in the group do similar projects with so many things to choose from. If I’d had some plain mugs, I would have done that too! 🙂
I don’t have much polish around because I tend to get manicures & pedicures. However, Dollar Tree has lots and lots of colors, so it’d be easy to put together a fun color palette, without spending much money at all. Like Halloween, because I’d never have black and orange polish at home!
I do my own pedicures because I can’t stand for anyone else to touch my feet – haha! Manicures are a waste for me because I mess it up within 5 minutes. The Dollar Tree would be a great place to find polish for a project like this. 🙂
Those are so pretty! We tried nail polish dipping a few dollar store mugs and while we found we had to work fast it was a lot of fun. Pinned.
Yes & having a ceiling fan going over you doesn’t help! 😀
I love the subtle colors you got on the glass and that you left some of them drops instead of swirls. It does look like watercolor, so pretty!
It was fun to try different things out & I’ll definitely be testing it out on more items in the future. It’s just so easy to do! 🙂
How pretty. It looks like so much fun. And a great way to use old polish and to recycle jars.
Thanks Debra! It was fun & my polish got more use than it has in a long time! 😀
Sounds like you had a lot of fun figuring out this project. Your end results are pretty, too!
Yes, it was fun to play around with! I think I’ll be trying it again. 🙂
What a fun project!! Love the soft colouring. I can see them with twinkling lights in them.
That’s a great idea Sam! That’s why I love these challenges – more ideas for creativity! 🙂
What a great way to add some color to some plain jars!
Thank you Roseann!
Fun way to dress up some jars for gifting. Great idea.
Thanks Bri! I can’t wait to fill them with some goodies. 🙂
These are so fun and a great way to use up old nail polish too! Love how you never know what designs it will create!
That’s why I like it too – you never know how it will look until the end! 🙂
I’m going to try this. Do you think certain brands worked better than others? I have some Sinful color and those look like they didn’t spread as much as the other nail polish brands?
The Sinful colors did spread if I put it in first. The dots happened if I put one color in the water first, let it spread, then added more. It was probably more because I was working under a ceiling fan on full blast! I cut it down, but it still affected the drying time.
I like the look of this technique on glass, very unique.
Thank you Kelley! 🙂
This is a really cute idea! I love crafting with nail polish. I actually have some of the same polishes you used!
My nail polish gets used more for crafting that it does for my nails! Haha! 😀
